SIZE: Oval, up to 1mm long

COLOR: White to red (if recently fed); gray (if meal is partially digested)

DESCRIPTION:

These mites usually feed on pigeons, sparrows, starlings and chickens. They can move from abandoned bird nests into buildings and attack humans, causing painful skin irritations.

CONTROL ADVICE:

If you own or handle birds, keep the coops clean and inspect the flock for infestation. Pets that spend time outdoors should be checked regularly for Bird mites. Discourage birds from building nests in or adjacent to buildings and don’t handle old nests. If you see a mite, call a professional.
